Chips Away Today

First and foremost, we're "car guys." If we weren't doing this for a business we would be doing this for fun. We love all things that have wheels and go fast. We appreciate vehicles of all types and understand that this is your baby and will do everything in our power to treat your vehicle with the same love and care that you would. Whether you’re a car enthusiast or not, your car is a reflection of you and is probably the second most expensive purchase you'll ever make. We know you want to keep it looking as nice as the day you bought it, and we want to help you do that.

Today's water born paints aren't as tuff as paints were even 5 years ago. Washing & waxing will prolong the shine, but PPF is the best way to prevent rock chips, abrasions, and other elements from damaging your paint. Our goal is to give you the best possible service and value in clear paint protection. We are a small co. with mid-western values, we don't relay on highs prices to inflate our quality, and likewise we don't use cheap prices to hide our quality either.

With so many different films and designs available today, it’s very hard to compare apples to apples in this business. We see it as our job to help you sort out these differences, so you can make a better buying decision. Obviously we would like you to use Chips Away for your PPF needs, but be assured that whether you use us or not, we will always give you honest answers to your questions.

Chips Away History

Chips Away officially got started in 1989, but the roots of my car enthusiasm go back to the mid 60's when I started building model cars at my home in Iowa. My hobby grew from model cars to R/C planes, to go-carts, and then eventually onto the real thing (In particular Porsche's and SCCA racing, but that’s another story).

I was first introduced to Paint Protection Film (PPF) back in the early 80's when I ran a ski shop (Yes they do ski in IA, and not behind a tractor either, at least not all the time). Back then I knew it as "Ski Saver" and used it to protect the tops of downhill racing skis.

Soon after moving to California I started a mobile paint touch-up service, and hence Chips Away was born (we are the only authorized Chips Away in the state, and are not associated with any imposters). As business grew, I began doing paintwork for our local Lamborghini importer, when they asked if I could put protective film on a bunch of Diablos that were going on a Pacific Coast road tour/race. At that time they were loaning out cars for the run and were concerned that the bumpers and air dams would come back all chipped up. So I made my own patterns, installed them on 25 Lambos, and now 12 years later my team and I still install kits for the same O.C. Lamborghini dealership.
